Review:
The premise of an underdog participating in a triathlon sets the stage for a story full of potential, offering dramatic moments, intense training sequences, formidable rivals, and the ultimate test of grit and determination. Writer-director Akshay Roy’s slice-of-life film attempts to tap into these elements, focusing on Vijay Matthew’s (Anupam Kher) journey to achieve something significant in his later years. Almost a septuagenarian, Vijay is a foul-mouthed, abrasive man who once had a promising athletic career but sacrificed it to care for his terminally ill wife. When his loved ones mistakenly believe he has passed away, his best friend Fali (Chunky Pandey) remembers him only as a garba king and rummy champion. This prompts Vijay to reflect on his life and realise he has accomplished little of substance.
The film starts off strong, with a blend of comedy and drama, especially in the witty interactions between Vijay, Fali, their friends, and his quirky coach (Vrajesh Hirjee). These moments and the one-liners keep the viewer engaged.
While the first half moves relatively smoothly, the pacing falters in the second half and plot points feel far-fetched; for example, Vijay and Aditya pretending to be bitter rivals for media attention.
As the story progresses, the narrative begins to lose focus. The core aspect of Vijay training takes a backseat as the plot meanders into areas that feel forced or unconvincing, such as the society politics, competition with an 18-year-old rival, Aditya (Mihir Ahuja), and excessive media sensationalism. Each time Vijay faces a setback, the resolution feels too convenient, with him being bailed out by a social media influencer (Adrija Sinha), a former rival, or even a minister.
Motivated by a desire to prove himself, he sets out to become a triathlete. However, his age proves a major obstacle, and he faces ridicule from friends, rejection from event organisers, and doubt from those around him. With perseverance and the support of well-wishers, he manages to secure a place in the competition. The film then follows his journey to prepare for and compete in the triathlon.
Anupam Kher and Chunky Pandey’s on-screen camaraderie is delightful, with quirky banter and colourful language. However, Fali’s caricaturish character hinges on stereotypes. Kher convincingly embodies the dogged athlete and a mulish man, though the character occasionally becomes over the top.
Despite these flaws, Vijay 69 is still a family-friendly entertainer that is worth watching once, especially if you’re in the mood for a light, feel-good story with a touch of comedy.
